Workshops can get messy very easily. I keep a small hobby area in the back of my garage which used to be super messy all the time. A few Christmas’s ago my wife bought be a few plastic storage bins. I have since added to them to create a very organized storage system in my workshop.
Color
Workshop plastic storage bins usually come in a standard yellow, blue, green and red although you do see them in different colors from time to time. Color separating your bins allows you for easy knowledge of what is inside with out having to look. For example nails, screws, bolts etc in one color and glue, sealant etc in another color. If you are really struggling to find parts consider buying some clear plastic storage bins so that you can look inside easily.
Size
In a workshop a large variety of storage bins are needed to accommodate the large variety of items and parts in a workshop. Small plastic storage bins are great for keeping fasteners, drill bits and small seals in. You can also put small tubes of glue or even stationary in these to keep your workbench tidy. Large plastic storage bins are needed when you want to carry a large group of items or for storing big items like drills, sheet metal parts and scraps of metal/wood.
Placement
Depending on what your workplace is like will depend on what type of plastic storage bins you will buy. The most versatile are the hanging and stackable plastic storage bins. You can either buy a louvered panel to hang the bins from in row or they fit together so that you can stack them in small piles. For long term part storage I recommend getting some plastic storage bins with lids as this will keep the parts from getting dusty and are stronger than the open top style bins.
