Over time, our pantry cabinets become disheveled and things are hard to find. Getting them organized sounds like a chore, but is really not so bad. And having things neatly in order will make things easier to find later.
Pick a day when you have a few hours to spend on this task. It is best if you can be alone to avoid interruptions.
Begin by emptying the pantry entirely. Put everything on a counter or on the floor. When you come across out-dated product, throw them right in the trash. Also discard things that are probably stale or that you really don’t use.
Once you have an empty pantry, give it a good cleaning. Use a good anti-bacterial kitchen cleaner and a rag. Oils get spilled as well as food, and these things are loaded with germs. If your trash bin is stored in there as well, it is likely that you have missed the pail a few times and the floor is also full of germs. Give that floor a good scrubbing too.
Now you can begin restocking the shelves. Start at the bottom. Heavy stuff like soda bottles and water jugs are best kept on the floor. Put items that you use most frequently at an eye level. Tall things, like boxes of cereal, should go on the top shelf. Organize the canned goods by creating rows of similar items. For instance, make a row of soups, a row of vegetables, and a row of sauces. Double stacking the cans will save even more space.
Get a plastic storage bin for little items like soup mixes and gravy mixes. This way they will be easy to find and not get lost among everything else.
You’ve put off this simple task because it seemed like a headache. But, you can actually make it fun. And you will love having organized pantry storage cabinets the next time you want to locate something in there!
