Depending on what type or garage door you have, you could have a whole lot of untapped storage above your cars in the garage. An overhead garage storage system is great way to add some extra storage to your house. In this article I will go over how you can build your own overhead storage or if you prefer, where to buy a good quality unit.
How to make your own overhead storage units
If you want to build garage overhead storage yourself, here is a great way to arrange some storage up on the garage ceiling.
Storing Bikes
To make a garage overhead storage rack for your bike buy two large hooks from your local hardware store. With your bike standing on the ground measure the distance between the points were the wheels touch the ground. Space the two hooks this distance apart in a beam running overhead. Turn the bike upside down and hang on the hooks by the wheels to store.
If you find the bike too heavy you can also set up a ceiling mounted bicycle storage hoist system with a block and tackle. Simply hoist the bike up to the ceiling and wrap the rope around a cleat hook. You can also use this method for kayak’s and similar.
Storing Boxes
The best way to store boxes is to create a large suspended platform that will hang from the beams of your garage. Use 2×6 beams to create the platform frame. Create a “floor” with nailed down chipboard or similar. Use slotted steel corner irons to attach the platform to the roof.
It is best to consult with a structural engineer and have him do some calculations on the design of your garage before you build this unit.
