One of the most popular pieces of furniture in a child’s bedroom is the toy chest, not least because this is the place where all of the toys are stored. However much fun a toy chest should contain there has been a checkered past in terms of safety for the children who have used them. Toy chests are basically boxes, the lids are hinged and can swing closed with a push and some of them are quite heavy. Dangerously heavy. There have been instances where children have been hit in the head by the lid of their toy chest, some of them have been trapped by the neck and suffocated.
To avoid such a devastating tragedy you should look for a toy chest that comes equipped with a safety hinge. A safety hinge is available as a spring hinge that can be set so that the toy chest lid will not slam closed. A second type of hinge is a gas loaded spring that controls the speed with which the lid may be closed. In both cases they will stop the toy chest lid from slamming closed.
The next feature that should be considered is whether there are air holes in the toy chest. Children love hiding away in small spaces such as can be found in a toy chest. If this is to occur there must be a source of ventilation in case the child is trapped inside for too long.
Finally, the toy chest must not be lockable. It must be possible to open the lid of the toy chest at all times. Again this is to avoid the possibility of your child becoming trapped inside the toy chest.
The safety of your child is always the most important aspect when buying furniture for their bedroom and these simple features will keep that safety aspect to the highest degree that you can hope for.
