Cleaning and Maintenance of Your Curio Cabinet

Many people like to display antiques, collectibles and family heirlooms in a piece of furniture called a curio cabinet. Cabinets of this type are typically made out of some kind of hardwood or polished metal and can be found in a wide range of colors designed to match any interior décor. Most curio cabinet furniture also incorporate a lot of glass to allow for easy viewing of the contents. Proper maintenance of your curio cabinet is required if you want to preserve the natural beauty and make sure it lasts a long time. You can enjoy your cabinet for several years if you pay attention to these handy tips.

The method of cleaning required will largely depend on what material was used to build your cabinet. You need to pay special attention to wood to keep it from warping out of shape. Metal, on the other hand, is fairly straightforward to take care of and will not require as much maintenance overall.

First, remove the contents of your cabinet so you have easy access to all surfaces and can reach into the corners. Apply a light coat of ordinary dusting polish to a soft cloth or rag. Gently wipe the surface paying attention to both the outside surfaces and the inside surfaces. Move the cloth in a circular motion and keep your movements smooth and even. Do not spray the surface of the cabinet but you can reapply cleaning solution to the rag as needed. This same cleaning solution can be used for metal surfaces, but there are cleaners designed specifically for metal that you can use if you want to.

For the glass sections of the cabinet, use paper towels and a solution that has been formulated to clean windows. Wipe down all the glass surfaces, both inside and out and make sure that you have not left any streaks behind.

Maintaining your curio cabinet will be just as easy as it is to keep it clean. Again, a wooden piece will require more attention and a bit more care. Wood works best in an environment that is not too humid or too dry in order to preserve the quality of the material used to build it. Temperature can also have an effect on a wooden cabinet. The ambient temperature should be kept between 65 and 75 degrees Fahrenheit in the room where your cabinet is stored.

If you follow this advice for maintaining and cleaning your curio cabinet, you can expect it to stay in great shape for a very long time.
