Cardboard boxes are very common. You should never need to pay for some used cardboard boxes. Ask at your local grocery store or my favorite the electronics store. Electronics usually come in big boxes and they simply flatten them and then pay someone to take them away. Why not save you both some money and take some free cardboard storage boxes off their hands.
Storing under the bed
Under the bed is one of the most underrated storage areas of the house. When I was younger I used to keep a spare mattress under my bed so that when friends came over they would have something to sleep on. If the cardboard storage box you are planning on using won’t fit under the bed, use a knife or scissors to modify the box so that it sits on a lower profile. Seal the box up tight with tape, you want as few air holes as possible.
Storing in the roof
For larger storage boxes, storing in the roof or the attic if you have one is a great idea. If you are storing straight into your roof make sure you lay some planks of wood along the cross beams to sit the boxes on. We don’t want the boxes sitting directly on the roof plaster. If you don’t have any planks of wood, look for some old pallets and break them up. Use the slats as your cross planks.
Buying recycled cardboard storage boxes
Most store bought cardboard storage boxes with lids are made from recycled paper and cardboard. That is why, even though they lack some of the strength of plastic storage boxes, I really like to use them for storing knick knacks around the house. Most purchased versions are decorative cardboard storage boxes, with many different colors and designs to choose from. It is very easy to find a set that will match into the décor of your room.
For your office, cardboard file storage boxes are an eco friendly option to store a small amount of files. Most people don’t require a file cabinet in their house and a file storage box will suit their needs just fine. It can also be used to store old files in your attic, basement or private storage. Used cardboard shoe storage boxes on the other hand are great for keeping old files in stacked away in your cupboard.
Remember to keep an eye out for free cardboard boxes. You can always flatten and store them until you need them later.
