Choosing a Bonnetiere Armoire

The consumer looking for affordable home storage space might consider the option of a bonnetiere armoire cabinet. These elegant, stylish furnishings which were familiar to the home owner of a century ago are becoming popular again.

In an age when most home come with several built in-closets, some might be unfamiliar with this type of storage option. The tendency of most modern home owners is to label any freestanding closet as wardrobe closets or armoires. In fact, there are several varieties of these useful pieces of furniture. A wardrobe is a basic, large, tall cabinet designed as a space to hang clothing. An armoire is a variety of wardrobe that contains shelving in addition to a clothing rod. In early 20th century America, armoires were referred to as chifforobes. Bonnetieres are a smaller type of wardrobe, one which has only one door and was traditionally constructed with a high, rounded top to facilitate its original purpose, the storage of bonnets, or hats.

Antique bonnetieres are still available, though the price for such an item is usually quite high. Searches for modern bonnetieres will discover a few manufacturers of modern versions, usually elegant reproductions of antique styles. These pieces are generally in fine woods and represent offerings by the luxury furniture market. Versions geared to appeal to the less rarified pocketbook are available by some manufacturers, including Pottery Barn. Many bonnetiere type furnishings can be found listed, less correctly but more accessibly, as armoires or one-door armoires. They range in styles from simpler, more rustic design, to elaborate re-creations of their antique French antecedents. These are usually constructed of wood or wood products and can include such accessories as mirrors or decorative hardware.

Nowadays, few people require a cabinet strictly to house their hat collection; however, a bonnetiere might be just the solution for the individual looking for portable storage options for smaller spaces. A variety of bonnetiere and armoire style furnishings are available, and many are designed to store clothing, goods, or even computer and entertainment electronics. Choosing one of these furnishings is as simple as finding the unit that appeals to the customer’s sense of style and personal price range.
